Melbourne Instruments has announced native Cycling '74 Max integration for its MIDI controller Roto-Control, bringing motorised knob control, touch-and-learn mapping, and haptic feedback to Max's visual patching environment via PLUGIN Mode.

Melbourne Instruments’ Roto-Control was already making a strong case for itself as a hands-on MIDI controller, and this latest update adds a significant new dimension. With Cycling ’74 Max now supported directly in PLUGIN Mode, the controller becomes a physical interface for custom instruments, audio and MIDI effects, and performance tools built in Max.

With Max supported in PLUGIN Mode, Roto-Control’s eight high-resolution motorised knobs, touch-and-learn parameter mapping, and haptic feedback work directly with Max patches. Parameters map to the hardware, are saved to the device, and recall automatically, meaning the knobs move to the correct positions when you load a session.

Roto-Control runs on 15-bit optical sensing for high-resolution MIDI control, with motorised knobs rated to 50 million cycles using drone-grade, contactless technology. Melbourne Instruments has been developing this hardware since NINA, the world’s first motorised analog polysynth, and DELIA, their bi-timbral hybrid synth. Roto-Control launched in 2025 as the company’s dedicated MIDI controller.

Beyond Max, PLUGIN Mode works with leading DAWs, and MIX Mode automatically syncs track colour and labels from compatible software.
