The ‘Big Green Monster’ was probably one of the most widely-used pedals to record with and was synonymous with indie rock, especially with the likes of Radiohead and Grizzly Bear. Its list of notable users would deserve its own article but can be linked to John Frusicante, Dave Grohl, Mike McCready, Matt Bellamy, and many more.
There are many reasons for this, one could be the price tag which makes it far more accessible to the bedroom noodlers, while the other is its simplicity to use due to its analog-like use as a digital device.
The original featured 15 digital delay models, you could adjust modulation, distortion, and tape-artefact characteristics, and there was also built-in tap tempo which was considered quite innovative at the time of release.
Fast forward to now, and the new model features a further 15 delays from the HX family of effects processors to make 30 in total, which includes Harmony Delay, Pitch Echo, Glitch Delay, Euclidian Delay, and ADT tape delay.
Four foot switches control the pedal, plus six rotary knobs, while there is a selection of immersive reverbs, and one and four-switch loopers with up to 240 seconds of recording time – expandable to several hours via the pedal’s microSD slot.
Line 6 Chief Product Design Architect Eric Klein said, “certain circles have touted DL4 as arguably the most important pedal of the last 20 years, and even after 23 years – an eternity in this industry – we couldn’t imagine messing with a good thing.
“Despite its new delays, modern capabilities, and increased fidelity, a single button press literally turns the DL4 MkII into a DL4 – so you can still party like it’s 1999.”
On the back there’s a mic input with level control, mono/stereo jack inputs and outputs, and full-sized MIDI in/out ports, plus a USB-C port.
The MkII is a lot smaller and no longer has a battery port because, well, no one really needs it these days.
