The new pickup set recreates the iconic tone of Peter Green's famous "Greeny" Les Paul, complete with reverse polarity neck pickup and Murphy Lab aging.
Few guitars in rock history carry the mystique of “Greeny” – the 1959 Les Paul that passed through Peter Green’s hands before finding its way to Gary Moore and eventually Kirk Hammett. Now, Gibson is offering players a chance to capture that legendary sound with the Aged Greenybucker Pickup Set, a meticulously crafted recreation limited to just 100 units worldwide.
Drawing directly from specifications taken from the actual PAF humbuckers installed in Hammett’s “Greeny” Les Paul, these pickups aren’t just another vintage-voiced set. They’re built to replicate the specific sonic fingerprint that made the guitar famous – including the reverse magnetic polarity in the neck pickup that creates that unmistakable, slightly hollowed “out-of-phase” character when both pickups are engaged.

“The magic of ‘Greeny’ is in the details – the way the pickups react under your hands, the way the middle position speaks, and the way every note feels alive,” explains Jared Brandon, Pickup Product Manager at Gibson. The company worked alongside Hammett to ensure every nuance was captured, from asymmetrical coil windings to unpotted construction that delivers the touch-sensitive, dynamic response players associate with original 1950s PAFs.
Cosmetically, the Murphy Lab has aged each set to perfection, giving them an authentic road-worn appearance that matches their vintage voice. Double black bobbins sit beneath aged nickel covers, with two-conductor wiring and Alnico 2 magnets completing the spec. DC resistance readings clock in around 8.3k for the rhythm pickup and 8.7k for the treble – right in that sweet spot where clarity meets warmth.
Beyond the technical specifications, it’s the middle-position tone that truly sets these pickups apart. The reverse polarity creates a vocal-like quality that’s been heard on countless recordings and remains one of the most celebrated quirks in electric guitar history.
As Gibson celebrates nearly 90 years of pickup design and manufacturing in Nashville, the Aged Greenybucker set represents a rare convergence of history, artistry and craft. With only 100 sets available, this is a limited opportunity to own a piece of that storied legacy.
