A.B. Original set to feature on NBA 2K22 soundtrack

Words by Sam McNiece

A milestone for the hip-hop duo of Briggs and Trials.

2K soundtracks have always been iconic. From 2k13 which was executively produced by Jay-Z to last years edition, there’s always appears to be a priority towards promoting hip hop artists. Now it’s A.B. Original’s turn to have their music played in homes around the globe while you cross up your friends and shoot 3’s in game.

What you need to know:

  • A.B. Original will feature on the NBA 2k22 in-game soundtrack which releases September 10, 2021.
  • They appear alongside international artists including Megan Thee Stallion, Freddie Gibbs, and NxWorries.
  • Briggs and Trials, Yorta Yorta and Ngarrindjeri men respectively, are the first Indigenous Australian artists to feature on the soundtrack.

NBA 2k, which is one of the best selling sports video games out there, has announced their artist roster for the soundtrack for NBA 2k22. A.B. Original are among the star studded roster that will play throughout the game which predominantly features American musicians.

A.B Original, who rose to prominence through the song ‘January 26’, which comments on the date used for Australia Day, have become a large voice in the hip-hop community here in Australia. Their political messaging is powerful and their representation on this global platform will help further their audience to a worldwide level.

On the new game, NBA 2K is evolving with the times, and will add new music to the game through updates on what they call “First Fridays”. Hopefully we will see more local representation throughout further updates to the game.

“Basketball and music are so intertwined and have become an integral part of our game,” said Alfie Brody, Vice President of Global Marketing for NBA 2K. “NBA 2K has become a global platform for music discovery and that continues with NBA 2K22. This year, we are creating a dynamic soundtrack, complete with early access to unreleased tracks, new artists, and opportunities for fans to become part of the experience and solidify their place in video game history.”

Also new in this iteration of the game is Producer Series, which integrates a beats pack and allows the community to record their verses over them. It’s unclear if they will share these with people playing the game but that will be revealed closer to launch.
