Trusting your headphone mix just got easier.
Genelec has released version 2.1 of Aural ID, its binaural headphone monitoring application for Mac. For those unfamiliar, Aural ID uses your personal hearing profile to make headphone mixes translate more accurately – essentially making your headphones behave more like a well-tuned studio monitor setup. The update focuses on making the application faster, cleaner and more reliable.

File management gets a clearer structure in 2.1, with Aural ID profiles and user configurations now stored in separate folders. For engineers juggling multiple sessions or different headphone setups, that separation makes staying organised a lot more straightforward.
Output EQ and Envelopment controls now sit directly on the main screen rather than tucked away in a submenu, and the settings pages have been updated with confirmation steps so changes don’t get saved accidentally. Quick bypass options for the EQ and Envelopment sections make it easy to compare the processed and unprocessed sound side by side.
Head tracking and Virtual Monitor Channel setup have both been overhauled and are now easier to configure. The tools for fine-tuning the position and sound character of your virtual speakers are also simpler to use – important given that personal calibration is central to how Aural ID works.
On the performance side, the app loads hearing profiles faster and processes audio more efficiently. A new buffering status indicator on the main screen keeps you informed of processing conditions in real time.
Genelec’s Managing Director Siamäk Naghian said of the update: “Aural ID is unique in enabling audio professionals to really trust every detail of their headphone mix – whether they’re working in stereo, or crafting complex immersive audio experiences. With the new 2.1 update, we’ve created an even more streamlined workflow, empowering engineers, producers, and audio content creators to move seamlessly between studio and mobile production environments with total confidence.”
Aural ID 2.1 is available now as an annual subscription or perpetual licence, with a 30-day trial available here.
