Swedish audio tech company Audiodo has integrated its full personal sound suite into the Astell&Kern PD20 digital audio player, marking the first time hearing-based personalisation has been applied to a reference-grade portable audio device.

Personal audio just got a lot more personal. Audiodo, the Swedish software company behind some of the more sophisticated hearing-based audio technologies in the industry, has announced a collaboration with Astell&Kern that puts its full enhancement suite inside the new PD20 digital audio player — a world first for reference-grade portable audio.

Hearing personalisation has become fairly standard in consumer earbuds and headphones, but applying it to a high-resolution DAP (digital audio player) is a different proposition entirely. Players at this level are built around absolute fidelity and transparency, and any processing that muddies or colours the signal is a non-starter for the listeners these devices are made for. Getting it right required Audiodo to work closely with Astell&Kern’s engineering team from the ground up, rather than bolting something on at the end.

The result integrates four distinct technologies: Personal Sound, which analyses your individual hearing profile and applies targeted adjustments to improve clarity and perceived detail; Audiosphere, which expands two-channel audio into a more immersive spatial presentation; and Acura and Equalizer processing for refined tonal control. Together, they function as a coherent enhancement suite rather than a stack of isolated effects — and crucially, they’re designed to operate without undermining the PD20’s underlying sonic character.

For high-end listeners running premium headphones or in-ear monitors, the proposition is straightforward: a player that adapts to how you actually hear, rather than assuming your hearing is neutral. Given that no two listeners perceive audio identically, it’s a logical step for the high-fidelity segment — just one that’s proven technically difficult to execute at this level until now.

Astell&Kern’s Product Manager Jay Ahn noted that the integration maintains the performance standards the brand’s listeners expect, with the personalisation remaining faithful to the original recording. Audiodo CEO Amir Sheikh framed it as a milestone for the company, demonstrating that hearing-based processing can scale into demanding reference environments without compromise.

The Astell&Kern PD20 is due to arrive in late March. Head to www.audiodo.com for more information.
