Words by Mixdown Staff

Esteemed pedal gurus J. Rockett Audio continue to impress with their latest overdrive circuit

Best known for their incredible overdrive pedal circuits such as the Archer, Rockaway and The Dude, J. Rockett Audio are considered one of the finest pedal manufacturers in the world. A fan favourite amongst their gem-laden catalogue, the Blue Note is a fantastic low-gain overdrive that is back and better than ever in its new and improved form, the Blue Note Select.

Combining the best features of all previous iterations of the pedal as well as adding some new ones, the Blue Note Select is a perfect choice of overdrive for pedal aficionados looking to push a dirty amp over the top for that classic Blues Rock sound.

Simple yet effective, the Blue Note Select includes controls for volume, tone and gain, as well as a ‘fat’ control that sculpts the pedal’s bass response and a ‘hot switch’ that adds an extra kick of dirt.

The Blue Note Select not only includes these new features but also includes major improvements to the looks, sound and overall feel of this fan favourite, all in a very small package.

Featuring new ergonomic custom knobs and a custom colour mixed to achieve an eye catching electric blue finish, the new iteration of the Blue Note is looking better than ever.

According to J. Rockett, the biggest improvement to the Blue Note with this new model is the quality of the low end, both in and out of ‘hot mode’. Potentially their best overall low gain overdrive, J. Rockett recommend using this pedal with an already slightly overdriven amplifier for the best sonic results. Skirting the line between boost and drive, the Blue Note Select is the perfect design to send a crunchy amp over the top. That’s how the pros do it kids.

The Blue Note Select allows you to add a subtle layer of gain to your sound as a base, or a slightly more ferocious tone in hot mode, which maximises the internal clipping.

According to J. Rockett, ‘The trick with the Blue Note Select is that you have two gain structures giving a wide array of drive so you can vary your amp type. We use the Blue Note Select to really push a Marshall Plexi because you can really tweak your bottom end to match. Please experiment because there are a good variety of sounds in a very simple setup. The best praise we have received about the Blue Note Select is that you can’t tell you are using a pedal.’
