GUNNS
Fuzzy pop hop
Gunns are fans of fuzz but they’re not afraid of their own reflections. They make sure the songs – which are echoic of both Brit pop and trip hop – are fully formed before heaping on the accentuating noise.
Friday July 31 – Mojos – Perth, WA

SOLO
Indie pop
Sophie Lowe (aka SOLO) is known for portraying Kate in the seriously disturbing incest flick Beautiful Kate. Thankfully, Lowe’s lovingly crafted indie pop music isn’t disturbing. That said, it ain’t exactly feel good listening either.
Friday July 31 – Standard Bowl – Sydney, NSW

TEX PERKINS & THE DARK HORSES
Croon rock
Tex just keeps on keeping on and I don’t know about you, but I find that hugely inspiring. Especially considering every project he’s involved in has a solidly formed identity. The Dark Horses are dark but accessible, croony but still bad to the bone.
Friday July 31 – Brisbane Hotel – Hobart, TAS
EYES MORE SKULL THAN EYES
Drone
The best way to experience drone music live is open to debate. Personally, I prefer to take it in sitting down, with earplugs in to reduce the room ambience, and eyes closed so as to properly savour the evocative sound movements. Go on, give it a go at Eyes More Skull Than Eyes on Friday.
Friday July 31 – Hotel Metro – Adelaide, SA
BARO
Hip hop
It’s often said that people grow up fast in New York City – a lot of golden age hip hop was made by dudes and girls under the age of 23. Melbourne MC Baro is only 18, but they boy’s music isn’t besmirched by the thumbprint of adolescence. He’s sharp tongued and in control, backed up by some sweet jazzy arrangements.
Friday July 31 – Black Bear Lodge – Brisbane, QLD

MANGELWURZEL
Punk jazz
Mangelwurzel are either jazz nerds playing at being a punk band or punk rockers fiddling around with jazz chords and brass instrumentation. Either way they’re having a fucking good time doing so. In fact, so pervasive is their good mood that it can’t be long before these guys take off for real.

ANDREW SINCLAIR
Electronic/world
Andrew Sinclair makes garage-y electronic music. It’s a sound borne of curiosity more than anything else. And that curiosity leads him to incorporate Eastern flavour, raw as shit percussion, and some dirty sub bass frequencies.
Friday July 31 – The Bird – Perth, WA

TINY LITTLE HOUSES
Freak folk
At the surface, Tiny Little Houses aren’t doing anything remotely new. This is lo-fi freak folk that grabs a lot from the likes of Conor Oberst and Neutral Milk Hotel. But they’re so gosh darn sincere that you can’t doubt the purity of their sentiments.

THE LAURELS
Space hop
The Laurels started out nearly ten years ago making a fuck tonne of shoegaze-y noise. Then they did an album called Plains, which proved they’re also solid tunesmiths. Now they’re back with ‘Zodiac K’; a groove based number led by a spoken word sample. So at this point, who knows what to expect from the live show.

SEA LEGS
Pop rock
Look, Sea Legs aren’t brilliant. But the stuff that burrows deepest into the heart often isn’t technically the classiest. This is kinked out indie pop that sounds like the work of a bunch of dudes kicking it in a room. Although it’s not a ‘90s throwback, if this were the ‘90s, the triple j audience would’ve gobbled this up.
Saturday August 1 – Woolly Mammoth – Brisbane, QLD
