Two Notes’ Captor X + sets a new bar for going direct with tube amps

Captor X
Words by Mixdown

The Captor X + brings True Stereo DynIR engine technology, a Virtual Load Shaper and expanded routing capability to Two Notes' already well-regarded load box lineup.

Getting a great direct tone from a tube amp has always involved a degree of compromise – but for any guitarist who wants tube amp tone without the room, the volume or the mic stands, the Captox X + may be your new go-to.

Two Notes’ Captor X + is an evolution of its popular Captor X that addresses nearly every frustration players have had with traditional cabinet setups, volume constraints, and inconsistent miking.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

With True Stereo DynIR, you can place and pan two microphones or static IRs independently to build out a genuine 3D stereo soundstage. Each mic or IR channel gets its own dedicated pan control and independent EQ, while the output stage adds a Stereo Enhancer, Stereo Reverb and a Twin Tracker. For players who’ve been chasing a wide, studio-quality stereo image from a load box, this is a significant step forward.

Routing has been overhauled, with each XLR output now receiving its own mic and IR channel, with independent mic and post-FX chains per output for precise tonal control. The Post FX Suite available per mic channel includes a Mic EQ, mono Enhancer, mono Reverb and an Output EQ – giving engineers and players a level of per-output control that wasn’t possible on the original.

The Virtual Load Shaper brings more customisation to the Captor X +. Rather than being locked to a fixed impedance response, you can select from a range of pre-set post-load impedance curves, or build your own custom profile, to shape how the processed direct tone responds. Options range from adding warmth and tightening lows to emphasising bite, with immediate results via the XLR outputs or headphones.

Rounding out the update is a USB-C connection for Torpedo Remote Desktop and an updated GUI for both the wireless and desktop variants of the Torpedo Remote software.

The Captor X + covers a lot of ground in a single unit and is available now in both 8Ω and 16Ω versions.
