Ólafur Arnalds is touring Australia with a self-playing piano

The innovative composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist will visit Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide across November and December, bringing the ambient textures of his new record to stages across the country.

Arnalds is also set to demonstrate and discuss his ‘self-playing piano’ while in the country, a software-driven concept which was created over two years in collaboration with composer and audio developer Halldór Eldjârn and is deemed to be “the centrepiece of Arnalds’ new works.”

In a statement for the upcoming performances, Arnalds discusses the unpredictable beauty of the software’s interaction with the piano, saying, “The self-playing pianos are a jolt to the creative process that forces me to try new and often surprising things.”

“In a live setting the pianos are an integral part of the performance due to their generative nature. Each time they are played is a little different, making every performance unique.”
