Elliot Smith’s band Heatmiser paved the way for their own brand of punk-fuelled, grunge rock of the early 90s.

Third Man Records and Heatmiser have today announced the release of a collection of previously unreleased recordings and songs, including unheard material, from the band’s catalogue. Elliot Smith’s band Heatmiser paved the way for their own brand of punk-fuelled, grunge rock of the early 90s. Smith deviated before the band ended, ultimately ending up focusing on solo work before he died in 2003.

Heatmiser released three albums and a handful of singles and EPs, ranging from 1992 to 1996. The rarities album announcement comes with the release of the first track “Lowlife”, and an accompanying live video of the song. Vocalist Neil Gust said:

“Tony [Lash, Heatmiser drummer] found a bunch of forgotten recordings and started mixing them and sending them to me. We were struck by the freewheeling energy of the band; you could hear how much fun we were having. In 1992, we could barely afford the studio so it all had to be done really fast. When we put the cassette together, we wanted it to start like a punch in the face. That’s ‘Lowlife.’”

Third Man Records will release the 29-song compilation in early October this year, and it will be comprised of their debut EP The Music of Heatmiser, previously only available at shows and via mail order, as well as a bunch of forgotten recordings.
