Roland has released Version 2.0 for the SPD-SX PRO Sampling Pad, a free update bringing time-stretching, DJ-style muting, SPD-SX backup file support and a raft of other new features.

Version 2.0 of the SPD-SX PRO firmware is here, and Roland has packed a lot into a free update.

The flagship sampling pad is already well-regarded for its customisable trigger LEDs, multiple audio and trigger connections, and substantial onboard memory. Now it’s picking up a considerable list of new features, available at no cost to existing owners.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

SPD-SX PRO Version 2.0 key features

Support for SPD-SX backup files
Users of the standard SPD-SX model can now load backup files directly into the SPD-SX PRO, making it easy to carry existing performance setups across to the new unit.

Time-stretching
Expanded time-stretching lets users tempo-match sounds much like a DAW. A real-time option delivers instant results, while offline processing offers even higher-quality output.

Assign master effects per kit
Master effects can now be assigned within individual kits rather than globally, allowing overall sound changes to be tied to kit selections and controlled via panel knobs during performance.

DJ-style muting
A new mute function lets performers run continuous backing tracks on pads and dynamically drop them in and out, borrowing a common DJ technique for added improvisational flexibility.

Trigger muting
Connected acoustic drum triggers and external trigger devices can now be muted by assigning their on/off status to individual pads, making it possible to reconfigure a large setup with a single pad strike.

Panel brightness
The brightness of all panel lights can now be controlled globally, letting users quickly adjust for different playing environments.

Additional enhancements
Version 2.0 also adds a kit list display, MIDI monitoring on the main screen, enhanced copy functions, the ability to set parameters across all pads simultaneously and support for user-imported images on the main kit display.

The update is free for all SPD-SX PRO owners, adding a significant amount of flexibility to an already capable sampling pad for both live and studio use.
