The Kid LAROI is now the youngest Australian solo artist to top the ARIA Album Chart

Words by Will Brewster

History in the making.

Breakout Sydney hip-hop sensation The Kid LAROI has made Australian chart history with his latest release Fuck Love (Savage), becoming the youngest ever Australian solo artist to top the charts.

Aged just 17, LAROI has become the youngest Australian artist to hit the top spot since Delta Goodrem went number one at 18 with the 2003 release of her debut Innocent Eye.

Fuck Love, which was initially released in August and hit #3 on the charts, was re-released as a deluxe version titled Fuck Love (Savage) in November, with the mixtape floating around the Top 50 for a whopping 28 weeks before hitting number one on Saturday.

The success of the release also results in The Kid LAROI becoming the second male Indigenous solo act ever to snag a top spot on the Australian album charts after Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu reached number one in April 2018 with his posthumous release Djarimirri (Child Of The Rainbow).

‘Wow, this is insane,’ The Kid LAROI responded to the news in a statement shared today.

‘#1 in my own country means more to me than anything in the world. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and been with me through all of this. I love you all and I can’t wait to see you all again soon.’

‘Huge congratulations to The Kid Laroi on hitting the top of the ARIA Albums Chart,’ newly appointed ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said in a statement of her own. ‘This is an incredible feat for an artist of any age, and with audiences around the world embracing his music, it is obviously just the beginning.’

The Kid LAROI, who signed a development deal with Sony Music Australia in 2017 and came to mainstream attention in 2018 upon uploading ‘Disconnect’ to Triple J Unearthed, has experienced a phenomenal rise to success over the past 12 months.

Last June saw the Redern-born artist hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with his song ‘Go’, a collaboration with late Chicago rapper Juice WRLD, while his mixtape Fuck Love  has received more than one billion streams globally.
