Ten years in the making: DW launches its most advanced hardware series yet

DW 9000X hardware series
Words by Mixdown

DW's new 9000X Series drum hardware has been a decade in development, promising repeatable setups, modular stability and time-saving features.

DW is raising the bar for touring hardware. The 9000X Series, the company’s new flagship hardware line, has been a decade in development and represents a ground-up rethink of the already industry-standard 9000 Series.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

The full range covers everything a working drummer needs. Three cymbal stands (9700XIL, 9701XIL and 9710XIL), four hi-hat stands (9500X, 9500TX, 9500XFX and 9500XFTX), two snare stands (9300X and 9339X) and three tom stand models (991X, 992X and 9791X) make up the complete lineup, all built around the same three priorities: durability, reliability and faster setup and teardown.

The tripod base and steel tubing are built to take a beating on the road, and the repeatable settings mean you’re not re-dialling everything in from scratch at every show. Dial it in at soundcheck, and it’ll still be there at the end of a long run of dates. The more interesting innovations are the ones that save time. DW’s InnerLock system is a cable-based internal height memory mechanism that retains stand height settings between shows, meaning setup is a matter of clipping in rather than starting from scratch. Boom stands can now be fully collapsed for transport too, with traditional memory locks no longer required, a practical improvement for fast changeovers.

The AutoLock boom angle adjustment is another standout. The patent-pending mechanism effortlessly tightens itself when setting boom angles, removing one of the fiddlier parts of stand setup without any extra steps.

The MOD Tripod Weights system replaces the sandbag workaround that drummers have been tolerating for years. Modular, stackable 1.9 kg weights install directly to the tripod base of any 9000X stand in seconds to counterbalance heavy cymbal or tom configurations. Optional AirLift cylinders — available in short and long variants — add air-assisted height adjustment for snare drums and rack toms, installed or removed with a standard drum key.

Rounding out the new features are a quick-release hi-hat rod system for faster assembly and asymmetrical snare baskets optimised for 10-lug snare drums — the kind of detail that shows DW has been listening to the drummers and techs who actually use this gear night after night.

Chad Smith features in the launch video, which is about as strong an endorsement as drum hardware can get.
