Most future-proof of all, the Pure Drive units feature UBS-C, ADAT and AES/EBU connectivity for more involved digital connection.

SSL’s legacy rivals most other pro audio brands, but they’re not content to leave it there. A growing range of more modern and refined products expanded this week with the release of the SSL Pure Drive Quad and Pure Drive Octo Microphone Preamplifiers. As their name suggests, they’re either four or eight channels of SSL in a 2U rack.

The SSL Pure Drive Quad preamps feature input Gain and Trim controls, the Trim knob doubles as a phase flip switch. All four pres have a ‘Line’ switch, the input for all four channels located helpfully on the left of the unit. Each channel has three stages of drive available, for subtle rounding to more overt grit and weight. There’s a sweepable high-pass filter (HPF) on the Quad, while the Octo features a preset HPF. Both units feature an insert for each channel.

Things get interesting with a ‘Z Ω’ switch available for each of the channels as well, switching resistance between 12.6k and 400Ω of resistance for a little extra tone shaping. The input and Trim controls are also stepped for recall or precision settings between stereo pairs.

The Pure Drive Octo features all of this, albeit with an extra four channels! Most future-proof of all, the SSL Pure Drive units feature UBS-C, ADAT and AES/EBU connectivity for more involved digital connection.
