Plasmatron: Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai gets signature pedal through Reuss

Words by Sam McNiece

Combining a couple killer vintage pedals in one.

Well, it seems there will not be any end to the amount of new pedals being created combining the best bits of one and another vintage pedal or revitalising them to keep up with the modern day. The Plasmatron is no exception to this, being a hand made and hand soldered combination between a Fab Tone and a Big M**f all done by Danish based Anders Marcusland-Reuss.

What you need to know:

  • Boutique pedal manufacturer Reuss have teamed up with Stuart Braithwaite to unveil the Plasmatron stompbox
  • The distortion pedal is based on one of Stuarts favourite guitar pedals, the Danelectro Fab Tone.
  • There are only 100 units being manufactured and they are available for preorder right now.

Designed in collaboration with Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai, this pedal is an upgrade to the Danelectro Fab Tone, combining the OpAmp of the BM (Big M**f) and joining them in series. This is a cool feature as you can blend between both pedals for two different sound qualities, one fuzz and one more gritty distortion.

In upgrading the original, Reuss has added a switch to reduce the pre-gain and get some control over the amount of distortion applied. The BM circuit features a switch inside the pedal to tighten up the low end and get rid of some mud which can occur when distorting an input source.

The original Fab Tone, as described by Reuss “is well known for delivering a great sounding, massive and intense full-frequency wall of distortion. Unfortunately the original pedals were poorly constructed with cheap jacks and pots and a bad and unreliable foot switch. Those parts are obviously easily fixed, but the Plasmatron is much, much more than merely a high quality boutique Fab Tone clone.”

These hand made pedals are available for preorder right now with a limited amount of 100 on the market.
