Peterson Tuners introduces the StroboStomp EVH

Words by Mixdown

The red, white and black striped strobe tuner comes with 13 guitar presets matched track by track to Van Halen’s 1978 debut, plus 11 for bass.

Eddie Van Halen tuned up on Peterson strobe tuners, the Model 400 among them, and the company has now built a pedal around his name and his tunings. The StroboStomp EVH is a new edition of Peterson’s StroboStomp HD, wrapped in Eddie’s red, white and black stripes and loaded with presets built from Van Halen’s 1978 debut.

Those presets use Peterson’s Sweetened tunings, which shift individual strings a few cents away from standard to make up for the tuning compromises built into most guitars. Eddie did something similar by ear, often easing a string slightly flat so particular chords and riffs rang truer, and Peterson has mapped that track by track, with 13 guitar presets matched to the songs on Van Halen, including “Runnin’ with the Devil”, “Eruption” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”. Bass players get 11 companion presets of their own, so a band can tune up to the original recordings together and play along without anything sounding sour.

“Eddie relied on Peterson tuners as he developed the sound and playing style that made him one of the most influential guitarists of all time,” Peterson says of the release, which brings the company’s 0.1-cent strobe accuracy to the pedal along with the largest display it has fitted to a stompbox.

Beyond the EVH presets, the pedal comes with Peterson’s full library of Sweetened and guided tunings, covering baritone and seven-string guitars, pedal steel, orchestral instruments and historic temperaments, along with drop and capo settings and unlimited user presets. Custom tunings and firmware updates are handled over USB through Peterson’s browser-based Connect utility.
