Mid90s will mark the pair’s ninth score for film and television, having previously been the award-winning minds behind the wiry electronica of The Social Network and the minimalistic soundtrack to Gone Girl. The work of Reznor in the ’90s incarnation of Nine Inch Nails defined much of the decade’s moody aesthetic, so here’s hoping for an industrial brunt to the score.
Written and directed by Hill in his feature film debut, Mid90s stars Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, and Katherine Waterston. The first trailer displays an achingly nostalgic look at the period in LA, littered with CDs and references to ’90s arcade games. The literally rose tinted montage is soundtracked by ‘After Laughter (Comes Tears)’ by Wendy Rene and ‘Gyöngyhajú lány’ by Hungarian rock band Omega (famously sampled by Kanye West on New Slaves), setting an eclectic precedent for Reznor and Ross to live up to.
