Too much disposable income? Not to worry. Record Store Day’s enviable limited run releases are returning for Black Friday to convert your languishing cash into wax. Mixdown has trawled through the list to pick out some highlights, though you can scroll the entire list on RSD’s website.
The Wombats: Australia’s favourite and endlessly touring act are releasing their debut EP Bright Antenna on a 10″ vinyl. The release will be a super limited run of only 1000, and considering the record has no previous vinyl iteration, this one will go quick.
Bauhaus: Gothic post-punkers Bauhaus are rereleasing a superb, and little heard live album from 1982, Press The Eject and Give Me the Tape featuring a very creepy cover of John Cale’s ‘Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores’. Released on white vinyl in a limited quantity of 1300.
Rage Against the Machine: The rap metal group, though defunct, are releasing Live and Rare, a double LP of rare demos and live iterations, including a cover of ‘Fuck Tha Police’ and a Prophets of Rage prototype, covering Public Enemy’s ‘Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos’ with Chuck D on lead vocals. Released on a limited run of 5000, previously only available in Japan.
Weezer: As part of the relentless (and potentially highly engineered) ad campaign for their cover of Toto, spearheaded by a fourteen year old girl on Twitter, Weezer are releasing their recorded version of ‘Africa’ on a 10″ picture disc, and yes, it’s shaped like the continent of Africa. Released in a limited run of 3000.
John Coltrane: In June this year, the Coltrane estate digitally released an unmissable collection, Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album of unheard originals by John Coltrane and his Classic Quartet (McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones), recorded at Van Gelder Studios in 1963. The RSD iteration, Selections from Both Sides at Once, includes two tracks from the record on a unique, collectable die-cut, orange vinyl 12″, limited to a run of just 5000.
The Flaming Lips: The crusty psych-rockers are releasing a bunch of demo tapes from the bizarro 1990 record Police Drive Ambulance as The Mushroom Tapes, featuring their classic lineup with Jonathon Donahue from Mercury Rev on guitar. The release is the track’s first as a standalone version, limited to 2500 copies.
