Titled Mønk, the album was recorded at a live performance in Copenhagen from 1963, and showcases the radical talent of Monk at the peak of his creative success alongside saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist John Orr and Frankie Dunlop on drums. While the LP features a relatively meagre five tracks, it’s worth noting they’re all regarded as canonical Monk tracks – there are two different takes of ‘Bye-Ya’, as well as ‘Nutty’, ‘Monk’s Dream’ and the enchanting cut ‘Body and Soul’. Certainly no shortage of classics here for jazz enthusiasts.
Set for release by Gearbox Records on Friday September 28, Mønk will be released in two variants – a limited edition clear pressing with a signature embossed photographic print of Monk, and a standard heavyweight black edition.
