Whether you’re looking for a casual job to keep the lights on between gigs or you’re on the hunt for a major career change, the music industry’s a tough place to crack into. To help out, we’ve compiled some of the best jobs going in the Australian music industry today, featuring opportunities from Thinking Loud, CMI Music & Audio, Spotify and GSus4.

Culture Specialist – Thinking Loud (Sydney) 

Thinking Loud are Australia’s experts in youth culture, managing PR accounts for the likes of Boiler Room, Red Bull, Jameson, Sampa The Great, Chet Faker, Cut Copy and beyond. They’re looking to hire a passionate and skilled individual to join their Sydney office as a Culture Specialist on a contract basis with a view to transition into a permanent role.

Skills / Experience Required:

  • Strong passion for music and culture, with a deep knowledge of the creative collectives, artist, trends and communities driving culture forward in Australia, covering key media, labels, artists, promoters, brands, trends, festivals and venues
  • Demonstrate a healthy network of contacts across these cultural industry sectors
  • Must be proficient in talent management and event curation
  • Minimum 3 years experience in PR, marketing, events or communications with excellent client management skills
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in marketing, events or communications
  • Strong admin and time management skills
  • Ability to solve problems and work independently
  • Copywriting experience is not essential, but advantageous

Tasks / Responsibilities Include:

  • Identify, recruit and manage key music and cultural partners; demonstrating network of opinion leaders and influencers across all relevant industry platforms
  • Be the creative link between PR/influencer, events and creative / design outputs of the agency
  • Provide creative and strategic input into all existing client campaign briefs & campaigns, events and new business pitches
  • Manage artist bookings process for events across Australia.
  • Provide support on the end-to-end management of select projects for brand clients of Thinking Loud, working with in-house and contract staff to plan and implement campaigns in line with set KPI’s
  • Assist where possible in building the agency client roster of music, cultural and brand clients and creating new business leads through existing contacts and research
  • Manage internal agency process documents and tools, including client reporting, WIP documents, run sheets, worksheets, KPI trackers and content schedules
  • Attend meetings, meet deadlines, troubleshoot problems, assist with tasks and attend events
  • Provide support at all agency events, including out of hours and weekend activities when requested
  • Be the main point of contact for suppliers and partners when coordinating branded campaigns / events / broadcasts and all relevant cultural projects
  • Supervise and develop interns and work with your team to manage the events intern program
  • Assist in the management and maintenance of agency social media channels + website
  • Demonstrate behaviours consistent with Thinking Loud’s values as a business

Assistant Podcast Producer – Spotify ANZ (Sydney)

You know them, you may or not love them, but you cannot deny that working Spotify would be a once-in-a-lifetime gig. The streaming giants are moving further and further into the podcast market in Australia, and they need your help – the Assistant Podcast Producer will work alongside and support the Creative Producer at Sydney’s Spotify Studios, helping out with day-to-day duties and working with external parties to deliver impeccable results.

Skills / Experience Required:

  • You have at least 2 years of working experience in the digital content industry, perhaps as an assistant digital, video or audio producer, production coordinator, or within a creative services team or agency
  • You love listening to podcasts, true interest and passion for the medium
  • You have a good understanding of the Australian and New Zealand media landscape
  • You are well organised, dedicated, with the ability to plan and deliver on tight deadlines and pay outstanding attention to detail
  • You live and breathe pop culture
  • You’re able to demonstrate a deep understanding of – and experience with – Spotify as a user and fan
  • You’re a great teammate, adapt well to change, a strong work ethic and have a positive attitude

Tasks / Responsibilities Include:

  • You will support the Creative Producer on existing & new original podcast productions and projects
  • You will provide support to the Content Partnerships lead on special partner projects
  • You will build and refine internal processes to independently execute operational and administrative tasks across our partnerships and production workflows such as budget documentation & payments, content calendars, briefing forms and show and campaign performance reporting
  • You will handle ongoing internal and external production workflows, including internal edit and promotional asset approvals
  • Support the team on planning and executing programming initiatives
  • You will help evaluate incoming content pitches
  • You will assist with project handling existing and new shows launches, e.g. work with internal partners on launch campaigns and always-on campaigns
  • You will generate and evaluate performance data to build insights to advise editorial decisions

Front Desk and Finance Support – CMI Music and Audio (Melbourne)

As the local distributors for JBL, Ableton, Native Instruments, Spector, ESP, Blackstar Amplification, Korg and more, CMI Music & Audio are renowned as a titanic force within Australia’s pro-audio and musical instrument markets. The Melbourne-based company are currently accepting applications for a savvy administrative guru to join the team in a reception and finance role, representing the first point of contact for the business.

Skills / Experience Required:

  • Bookkeeping experience preferred, but not essential;
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Outstanding data entry skills;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Able to work unsupervised & as part of a team;
  • Be disciplined and committed;
  • Have a positive & “can-do” attitude;
  • MYOB experience preferred, but not essential.

Tasks / Responsibilities Include:

  • Front desk customer service;
  • Travel booking administration;
  • Processing of sales invoices and credits in dHouse, as and when required;
  • Following up and resolving any discrepancies with the allocation of customer payments,
  • Assistant backup for the Shipping Manager, including receipting stock into dHouse and other ad hoc administration tasks;
  • Assistant backup for the Credit Controller with respect to the calling of customers to remind them to pay their accounts;
  • Assistant backup for the Bookkeeper, including Input of accounts payable invoices into MYOB;
  • Ad hoc project work as and when required.

Sales/Marketing Specialist – GSus4 (Sydney)

GSus4 are a unique three-in-one entity, comprised of a music shop, cafe and performance hall – sounds like a whole lot of fun! They’re on the hunt for a suitable candidate to join the music shop, based in Sydney’s inner-west, and assist in day-to-day sales and marketing, as well as general online duties.

Skills / Experience Required:

  • Well rounded knowledge of instruments and pro-audio
  • Dynamic and outgoing personality
  • Great communication skills both verbal and written
  • Dedication to top-notch customer service
  • The ability to take ownership of tasks and work unsupervised
  • Digital Marketing, Copy Writing and Content Creation skills would be seen as advantageous
  • Bilingual (Korean / Chinese / Japanese) will be highly preferred
