Regardless of the status or frequency of performances, songwriters can be paid for their work by logging into their APRA AMCOS account and sharing performance details from the last year.
It’s hardly chump change, either—just last year $7.2 million in live performance royalties were paid out to over 16,000 members. It’s an important reminder that songwriting isn’t a thankless act, with exploitative pay-to-play systems running rife throughout national music circuits.
Amy Shark, popster of ‘Adore’ fame, is a past user and keen advocate of the system.
“I played gigs for many years and it helped to make me a better songwriter,” Shark said. “The live performance royalty also really helped to fund my ambitions when I was first starting out. Don’t miss out, submit your setlists.”
The deadline to submit reports is Tuesday July 31, but don’t panic; APRA AMCOS is holding free workshops around the country in how to lodge, starting last night in Adelaide. Staff will be there to answer all your questions and assist the submission process.
