With a higher SPL and lower power usage than previous iterations.

Genelec’s range of loudspeakers are some of the most impressive and minimalist designs around that don’t only look stunning, they sound gorgeous as well. Their newly announced 6040R is no exception, building upon their collaboration with Finnish designer Harri Koskinen to develop a freestanding studio monitor with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a Genelec product.

What you need to know:

  • Genelec have announced the brand new 6040R Smart Active Loudspeaker.
  • The speaker is a freestanding unit made in collaboration with Finnish industrial designer Harri Koskinen who has been a main collaborator for 20 years.
  • Genelec’s newest addition boasts an increased power output with a higher SPL, better phase linearity while using less power.

The new model stands just shy of one metre tall, with a 6.5 inch woofer and 0.75 inch tweeter independently driven by two dedicated 150W Class D amplifier stages. It can achieve a max SPL of 110dB pushing out frequencies from 43Hz to 20kHz. The 6040D also features both analog and digital inputs with AES/EBU and SPDIF available for use alongside a digital output.

This new design is made from recycled aluminium and according to Genelec Managing Director Siamäk Naghian “this is a design that is based on our long-term commitment to sustainable manufacturing”.  Combine this with the lower power use despite the loudspeaker improving SPL from previous iterations and this new monitor seems too good to be true.

As with a majority of new Genelec releases, the 6040D has access to GLM 4.1 room calibration and Smart Active Monitor (SAM) systems. The combination of these two DSP processes allows for a cleaner and flatter frequency response with increased phase linearity, a bonus on all accounts.

“I’m thrilled to be involved in the rebirth of the 6040,” comments designer Harri Koskinen. “When I first met Genelec founder Ilpo Martikainen in 1999, he had a clear vision for creating a unique look that would set Genelec apart aesthetically – and with the 6040A, we designed a loudspeaker that was truly ahead of its time both visually and technically. With the huge advances in technology that have taken place in the last 20 years, it feels right to be raising the bar even higher for today’s sophisticated listener with the 6040R.”

Genelec 6040R Smart Active Loudspeaker does not currently have a price or release date but watch this space for updates.
