What if your classroom sounded like a professional studio? At Ritsumeikan, Genelec’s pro audio gear is giving students that exact experience.
As one of the leading private educational institutions in Japan, Ritsumeikan University is committed to providing its students with the most practical and cutting-edge learning experience. To achieve this, the university has chosen Genelec, one of the world’s foremost audio equipment and acoustic design companies, to renovate and upgrade its classroom facilities.
“Understanding sound is critical to creative decision-making and Genelec’s monitors provide the precision and reliability needed for this,” shared Professor Nobuhiko Matsukage, a highly acclaimed sound engineer and two-time Japanese Academy Award winner, who played a pivotal role in shaping the university’s audio capabilities.

The renovation project covers six state-of-the-art rooms, including an MA room, an ADR dubbing room, and several sound design suites. All are equipped with Genelec’s The Ones coaxial monitors, that which integrate tweeter and midrange drivers into a single unit. This design helps eliminate crossover frequency issues, ensuring consistent clarity and sound fidelity across all listening positions.
Since students frequently move between different sound rooms, maintaining consistent sound quality across all spaces was a major challenge. Genelec’s GLM (Loudspeaker Manager) software easily addressed this by providing automatic room calibration, fine-tuning each space for optimal acoustic performance.
“The good thing about GLM is that it makes corrections to suit the room all at once,” Matsukage explains.
“It saves you the trouble of trial and error in a limited time. Once you try GLM, there’s no going back.”
Depending on the room’s purpose, each is outfitted with either 5.1 or 7.1.4 surround sound systems, creating immersive, cinema-like environments. These systems are ideal for everything from small studio setups to larger learning spaces.
Beyond surround sound, the classrooms feature professional-grade monitors and subwoofers from Genelec. The monitors—models 8361, 8351, and 8341— can reproduce an incredibly wide frequency range—from the lowest bass notes to the highest trebles—covering the full spectrum of human hearing. Even at high volumes, the sound remains powerful, accurate, and distortion-free, ensuring that every note and every detail is faithfully reproduced for a vivid, multi-dimensional audio experience.
Complementing these monitors are Genelec’s 7370 and 7380 subwoofers, which provide deep, punchy bass that enhances the realism of any audio production. These advanced subwoofers can handle a variety of music genres and audio applications with ease. With high SPL capability and low distortion, they deliver extended low-frequency performance that’s essential for professional environments such as music production, film, and broadcasting.
Founded in the late 1970s, Genelec has long been one of the world’s leading innovators in the design and production of active loudspeaker systems. From professional studios to educational institutions, Genelec is known for its dedication to research and development, delivering faithful sound reproduction, exceptional reliability, and flexibility in any acoustic environment.
