Fender revives the ’62 Super brown panel amp

Fender '62 Super Amp
Words by Mixdown Staff

Fender has brought back one of its most sought-after designs with the '62 Super amp, a faithful recreation of original brown panel amplifiers.

Originally produced in the early 1960s, brown panel Fenders occupy a unique place in amplifier history. They bridged the raw, aggressive tone of ’50s tweed amps with the cleanliness that defined the mid-’60s black panel models. For years, vintage originals have been going for high prices, so this American Vintage reissue is a godsend for players who can’t drop that kind of cash.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

The ’62 Super delivers 40 watts through dual 6L6 output tubes, driving two 10-inch Celestion Custom Design speakers. Six 12AX7 preamp tubes and a 5AR4 rectifier tube handle the front end, producing that characteristically warm, woody, clean tone that brown panel amps are known for. Push it harder and the overdrive blooms with a sweetness that’s difficult to replicate with other circuits.

One of the standout features is the phase-shifting harmonic tremolo, a more complex effect than standard amplitude tremolo that creates a swirling, dimensional quality. No matter what volume you’re playing at, the tremolo adds movement without overwhelming your core tone.

Fender has nailed the aesthetics, too. The cabinet features period-correct brown Nubtex covering with aged wheat grille cloth, while the included vintage-style brown single-button footswitch and fitted amp cover complete the package.

At 40 watts with a 2×10 speaker configuration, the ’62 Super hits the ideal power range for studio work and gigs without being overbearing. For tone seekers, Fender collectors, and anyone looking for that elusive brown panel sound without the high vintage price tag, this reissue deserves serious consideration.
