Epiphone and Gibson Custom Shop team up for ’59 Les Paul Standard reissue

Words by Will Brewster

An affordable version of the vintage classic.

For the first time ever, Epiphone have joined forces with the Gibson Custom Shop to unveil a reissue of the ’59 Les Paul Standard: an instrument regarded by many as the most desirable electric guitar of all time.

An instrument three years in the making, the collaboration between Gibson and Epiphone could hint at what to expect from the two brands moving into the future, with Gibson Custom Shop Head of Product Development Mat Koehler describing the guitar as “As one of many collaborations to come, we were able to incorporate many of the ‘guitar geek’ upgrades and features we celebrate at the Custom Shop and offer that to the Epiphone audience.”

Featuring period correct appointments and an artificially aged finish – the first Epiphone to ever do so – the Epiphone ’59 Les Paul Standard boasts a hand-rolled neck profile with long neck tenon and ’50s style wiring.

The ’59 Les Paul Standard is also built with a hefty mahogany body and maple top with a AAA figured maple veneer, while cream binding helps to add a touch of class to the exterior of the guitar. A mahogany neck with an Indian laurel fretboard is also present, with 22 frets offering a viable platform for all your fretboard acrobatics.

Perhaps most enticingly, the Epiphone ’59 Les Paul Standard is loaded with Gibson USA’s BurstBucker pickups, wired to premium CTS pots with Mallory capacitors to retain signal clarity. Thanks to the ’50s-style wiring, these pickups will also keep their top-end when the volume’s dialled down, letting you tap into that classic blues burner tone that makes the ’59 Les Paul such a coveted guitar among players.

Elsewhere, the guitar features a LockTone bridge and stop-bar tailpiece, with Epiphone Deluxe tuners and Switchcraft hardware rounding out the instrument.

The Epiphone ’59 Les Paul Standard is topped off with a commemorative medallion toggle plate to celebrate the collaboration between the two brands, and is also available in two classic finishes: Aged Dark Burst and Aged Dark Cherry Burst.
