The latest FP-series digital piano runs Roland's Piano Reality sound engine and PHA-4 keyboard, and links to the Skoove-built Piano Sphere app for lessons and real-time feedback.
Roland has launched the FP-40, its first piano with onboard Wi-Fi. It comes tied to Piano Sphere, a free learning app made with Skoove, and connects to your home Wi-Fi by itself, so Piano Sphere is ready to go the moment you switch the piano on.

The FP-40’s sound comes from the Piano Reality engine Roland uses in its GP-series grands, mixing samples with some modelling for the resonance and dynamics of an acoustic. The PHA-4 Standard keyboard has fully weighted hammer action, escapement and Ivory Feel keys, and its triple sensors track fast repeated notes more accurately, so it’s an action a beginner won’t grow out of quickly. A redesigned speaker layout adds low-end, so more of the playing comes through.
Piano Sphere is built on Skoove’s teaching method. It starts players on songs they already know and builds lessons around skill level, taste and pace, with step-by-step guidance. When a passage gives trouble, the Piano Sphere button on the piano flashes to offer help, and streaks and reward badges keep the practice habit going. The app is free with the piano and comes with 100 licensed pop and classical songs, no subscription needed, with over 1000 more songs and lessons available as an upgrade.
Because it’s online, the FP-40 logs playing time even when the app is closed, updates itself wirelessly and gains new features and content after purchase. Bluetooth and USB-C handle the rest of the connections, for streaming audio through the speakers, recording, or running the Roland Piano App to adjust the sounds. The cabinet comes in black or white.
