Words by Mixdown

Scarlett 3rd Gen, Clarett+, Clarett USB and three second-gen Scarlett units can now run Focusrite's rebuilt control app, available today.

Owners of older Focusrite interfaces can now update their unit. Focusrite Control 2, the company’s software for running its interfaces from a computer, now works with the wider range – the Scarlett 3rd Gen, Clarett+ and Clarett USB lines, plus three second-generation Scarlett units, the 6i6, 18i8 and 18i20. Owners of any of them can download it today.

Focusrite Control 2

  • Now compatible with Scarlett 3rd Gen, Clarett+ and Clarett USB, plus the second-gen Scarlett 6i6, 18i8 and 18i20
  • Rebuilt interface and redesigned mixer, with clearer metering and reworked routing
  • Multi-interface control for switching between USB-connected units without replugging (macOS only for now)
  • Screen reader support built in for visually impaired musicians
  • Automatic updates, and hands-off driver compatibility on Windows

Focusrite Control 2 takes over from the older Focusrite Control, and it’s a different beast. The interface has been rebuilt and the mixer redesigned, with clearer metering that makes signal levels easier to read at a glance, and routing has been reworked as well, so getting a setup configured is far less fiddly. For anyone running more than one interface, multi-interface control lets you move between USB-connected units without unplugging and reconnecting each time, though that feature is macOS-only for now. Another highlight addition is screen reader support, which has been integrated with visually impaired musicians in mind.

Automatic updates keep the software current without any manual downloading, and Windows users are spared the usual driver housekeeping. Control 2 maintains driver compatibility on its own, so performance stays stable. For anyone shifting across from the original Focusrite Control, make sure to first uninstall is before moving to Control 2 – the two can’t run alongside each other.

Pulling the Scarlett, Clarett+ and Clarett USB lines into the same app as the newer gear means owners with a mix of interfaces don’t need to switch between separate control softwares. It also keeps the older units up to date, so you’re not forced to buy a new interface every year – a Scarlett 2nd Gen bought years ago now runs the same current software as the latest gear.

Focusrite Control 2 is available now for the newly supported interfaces, downloadable here.
