The new tube-free amplifier uses digital processing to recreate the legendary 5150III tone in a lightweight, portable package designed for modern guitarists.
EVH has launched the 5150III Hypersonic 6L6 1×12, a digital combo amplifier that tackles one of the most persistent challenges in guitar amplification: delivering authentic tube tone without the weight, maintenance requirements, and volume constraints of traditional valve amps. Weighing approx 17kgs and powered by what EVH describes as “massive digital processing,” the Hypersonic aims to capture the power, clarity and dynamic response of the revered 5150III tube amp in a format suited to home studios and gigging musicians alike.

The amplifier features three independent channels, each with its own noise gate. This is an important inclusion for high-gain playing, where unwanted noise can quickly become a problem. Channels one and two offer concentric gain, EQ and volume controls for precise tone sculpting, while channel three opts for a single-knob. This level of control extends to the updated footswitch, which now allows remote switching of both reverb and effects loop during performances.
A power selector provides full output, plus five attenuated settings, allowing guitarists to dial in their ideal tone at any volume level—perfect for apartments, townhouses or studio work where cranking a full stack isn’t ideal. For recording and live sound applications, the balanced XLR line output includes built-in impulse response cabinet simulations, delivering studio-ready tones directly to mixing boards or interfaces. A mute switch enables silent stage monitoring and quiet recording sessions.
Paired with a premium Celestion speaker and closed-back plywood cabinetry, the Hypersonic 6L6 1×12 is designed to deliver authentic EVH volume and dynamics that are “virtually indistinguishable from the all-tube original.” Los Angeles-based guitarist Frankie Lindia demonstrates the amp’s sonic capabilities in the video above, showcasing its range from pristine cleans to the signature high-gain growl that defined Eddie Van Halen’s sound.
“This represents the next evolution in EVH amplification, delivering Eddie’s iconic tone through innovative digital technology,” said Jon Romanowski, VP of Product at EVH Guitars. “The Hypersonic 6L6 1×12 breaks down the barriers that have kept players from accessing authentic EVH sound, making it more portable and versatile than ever before.”
Available in classic black or ivory vinyl covering, the EVH 5150III Hypersonic 6L6 1×12 is available now. This amp represents EVH’s commitment to honouring Eddie Van Halen’s spirit of experimentation while still addressing the practical needs of contemporary guitarists.
