After being owned by Gibson for the better part of 25 years, Drum Workshop has announced the acquisition of legendary drum brand Slingerland Drum Company.
News of the acquisition was announced via Slingerland's YouTube channel, with Drum Workshop CEO Chris Lombardi giving the brand to his father and DW founder Don Lombardi in the form of a cake at his birthday. It's a pretty heartwarming video, and it's obvious that the Slingerland brand means a lot to Don Lombardi.
Slingerland was originally bought out by Gibson back in 1994 as part of a deal that included the Gretsch drum brand. However, Gibson ceased the production of Slingerland drums years ago in order to focus on the production of fretted instruments, leaving many a drummer in doubt that they'd ever have the chance to play a new Slingerland kit again. It seems that those days are behind us now, with Drum Workshop accompanying news of the acquisition with the announcement that "a new generation of Slingerland instruments" is set to appear next year.
Drum Workshop is distributed in Australia via D'Addario.
