FEEDING FAUNA
Rock-pop
A solo project for Brisbane’s Louise O’Reilly (Laneway), Feeding Fauna invites comparisons to the powerful ‘90s alt-rock of PJ Harvey and Liz Phair. This Thursday, O’Reilly launches her new single ’50 Million to One’, alongside experimental Brisbane artist Andrew Tuttle, who’s also flogging a new release.
April 23 – The Bearded Lady, Brisbane QLD (w/ Andrew Tuttle)
SCOTT & CHARLENE’S WEDDING
Garage pop
There’s nothing ground-breaking about Scott & Charlene’s Wedding. But not only is Craig Dermody an infectious songwriter – and this gig comes with the promise of new tunes – but his stage manner is so charmingly relaxed that he effectively convinces you not to sweat the small stuff.
Thursday April 23 – The Old Bar, Melbourne VIC
THE SHABBAB
Garage Boogie
The Shabbab offer a rootsy take on garage rock, which calls to mind Nuggets psych and The Stooges. A notoriously unstoppable force on stage, this weekend their national tour hits WA
.
Friday April 24 – Mojos, Fremantle WA
Courtney Barnett
Indie Folk
Barnett’s Laneway Festival appearances earlier this year proved just how adept she’s become at commanding a mass audience. Her entirely sold out album tour kicks of this weekend, fittingly opening in her former home town of Hobart
.
Friday April 24 – Wrest Point Show Room, Hobart TAS
BOO SEEKA
Hip Hop / Soul
Sydney duo Boo Seeka combine bits of UK trip hop with neo-soul to create an especially comforting aural experience. They’ve spent the past month selling out relatively small venues all over the country. Get in while you still can, because they’ll surely move onto bigger rooms in no time.
Friday April 24 – The Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane QLD
THE LOVE JUNKIES
Agro Indie
The Love Junkies fit in somewhere between Modest Mouse and Front End Loader. That is to say, the Perth trio make pummeling pub-ready rock, which is centred around Mitch Macdonald’s frenzied vocals.
Friday April 24 – The Standard Bowl, Sydney NSW
ANDY BULL
Pop
Andy Bull writes great pop songs. Andy Bull also knows a thing or two about luscious electronic production. But Andy Bull’s really in his element live. Where the heck does he get that insane Carole King vocal register from? This Saturday, Bull and his band – featuring Dappled Cities and Hungry Kids of Hungary members – strut their stuff up in Newy
.
Saturday April 25 – The Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle NSW
TWO AGE
Space Rock
Sydney curiosity Two Age cite the likes of TV On The Radio and Frank Ocean as influences. Accordingly, their limited recorded output features some carefully handled instrumental interplay. They’ll benefit from a bit of grubbiness provided by the OAF Gallery Bar this Saturday.
Saturday April 25 – OAF Gallery, Sydney NSW
DAVE GRANEY & THE MISTLY
Freak Folk
While Dave Graney’s got several decades worth of off-kilter Aussie folk tunes to showcase (his latest LP with the MistLY was 2012’s You’ve Been In My Mind), it’s worth heading along for his banter alone. An eccentric raconteur, Graney’s both a whimsical storyteller and blunt commentator.
Sunday April 26 – Wheatsheaf Hotel, Adelaide SA
MOTEL LOVE
Power pop
Monday’s still the weekend, right? The party’ll kick on when Motel Love hit the Northcote Social Club stage, followed by legend of Aussie rock, punk and garage, Kim Salmon. It’s going to be a catchy chorus and power chord frenzy – allow yourself the indulgence.
Monday April 27 Northcote Social Club, Melbourne VIC
