Dark wave
Marc Dwyer’s Buzz Kull project doesn’t keep hush-hush about its interests and influences. Dwyer’s synth-driven dark wave compositions are direct descendants of New Order, Devo, Depeche Mode and the like. No surprise, then, that they’ve nabbed the Sydney support for Californian post-punk act The Soft Moon.

The Delta Riggs
Rock ‘n’ soul
The Delta Riggs began as a group of rock’n’rollers with reasonable chops but who were too much in awe of the Rolling Stones. They then tried to broaden the picture by ingesting a whole lot of golden age hip hop. Their third album, Active Galactic, stands somewhere in between – the Stones influence hasn’t faded, but the grooves could provoke a dance floor.

Melbourne guy Lalic digs the totally whacked end of ‘60s psych. There’s none of that free love and nineteen minute guitar soloing. This is truly solitary, stuck in a trip psychedelia. His tunes are a bit of a mess, but that’s what makes them worthwhile.

Chasing Ghosts
Rock
Chasing Ghosts, the Americana-influenced rock’n’roll project of Jimmy Kyle, returned this year after five years of silence. Now with a full band in tow, Kyle’s embraced his rock influences more than before, making tunes reminiscent of Luca Brasi or early Gaslight Anthem.

The Laurels

Psychedelic shoegaze experimentalists The Laurels have a new album. It’s called Sonicology and it’s very good. They’ll play some decent headline shows to launch it then probably grab a few good support slots and maybe appear on the summer festival trail. This album warrants big things, though. Acclaim, admiration, acid.

Hideous Sun Demon have the ability to get people very excited. The day after a Sun Demon gig, the witnesses can’t focus. Their everyday work tasks seem completely pointless, foreign even. They have seen the light. It’s loud, ugly and poisoned by debauched groove.

The Vines are going to play some shows. You should probably say ‘who cares?’ but then you watch the ‘Get Free’ video and think, ‘Jeez they really were quite good when I was 14. What’s to say anything’s changed in the last 14 years?’ A lot has changed, but you’ll still watch them and cross your fingers Craig Matthews doesn’t beat up his new bass player.

Adelaide dudes The Hard Aches are in touch with their feelings. They might pretend to be a party punk band all about the beers and group sing-alongs. And yeah, these things do sit well with their music, but what drives the songwriting is the band’s sensitivity, naivety and longing for connection.

Cliché’s music never fails to shake you out of your stupor and switch you onto the urgency of existence. Go on, give it a try then get back to me after you’ve finally filed your tax return. On that note, the cut-off date for the 2015-2016 financial year is Monday October 31, and Cliché is helping out by playing a Melbourne show the night before.

The La’s were from Liverpool, existed for a good ten years, released one album and a whole bunch of singles. But chances are you only know ‘There She Goes’, and perhaps don’t even know who its by. Melbourne garage punks Flour have a new tune called ‘There She Goes’. Listen to it. Listen to their other songs. Remember their name. Don’t let them become The La’s.
