The descriptor ‘sci-fi’ could well be taken as an insult, and it’s the sort of tag that says more about the writer than the artist. But the use of the term here isn’t some fuddy duddy claim that Miles Brown’s music is a kitschy imitation of an alien broadcast. His music does, however, sound as though retrieved from an alternate dimension, informed by a sound palette not accessible here on Earth.

Sydney singer/songwriter Montaigne didn’t introduce herself via some scrappy bedroom demo. Rather, twelve months ago the gutsy singer emerged with the fleshed out, high definition piece of baroque pop, ‘I Am Not An End’. She then followed up with an EP, and in recent months has skilfully transferred her dynamic studio sound to the live stage.

Whenever a group champions a soul/funk sound, the term ‘throwback’ gets bandied about. But there’s a difference between having firm roots and being reliant on nostalgia. Melbourne’s Cookin on 3 Burners fall into the former category, bringing a grit and melodic timbre that’s all their own. Both details are enhanced by the inclusion of Tex Perkins on vocals.

“Will you leave your body babe?” That’s the question asked by Loose Tooth’s latest single ‘Will You’. Well, it’s one in a ceaseless stream of questions, but it’s the one that stands out. Here the Melbourne band deposit a double entendre, suggesting that maybe leaving your body ain’t so bad. Not if it means surmounting inhibitions – something the song’s rollicking garage rock pulse makes very easy.

Jai Pyne is the former frontman of Sydney trio The Paper Scissors. Man were they a great band; criminally underrated, but sometimes bands benefit from being underrated. In the case of The Paper Scissors, it ensured their music stayed awesome. All good things must end, and now Pyne’s gone solo. He’s just released his first EP Jaisus – a work of bedroom pop that recalls TV On the Radio as effortlessly as it does Beck.
