As a thinline acoustic guitar, the APX600 also has a slightly reduced scale length of 25” and a narrower string spacing. Yamaha also highlight an improved bracing system in these models to increase bass response, something that was often commented on as lacking in the original models. With a natural spruce top on this version, there are also finish options such as Black, Vintage White, Sunburst and Blue Burst. In terms of electronics Yamaha have used their own Piezo pickup system and preamp with the standard controls of volume, bass, high, and mid, which has a further slider for focusing from 10-80kHz. The included tuner is also makes it a useful guitar for acoustic playing and amplified scenarios.
My first reaction was that the APX 600 had a bigger, more pronounced acoustic tone with a larger bottom end than the older models I’ve played. This guitar definitely has some more oomph than the original APX’s and the satin finished neck is a nice contrast playing wise to the gloss body, making it less sticky and more comfortable to get around. Yamaha’s classic APX cutaway makes higher fret access easy and the smaller sizing feels quick and comfortable without seeming gimmicky.
Based on the hugely popular APX500, Yamaha have taken one of their best selling acoustic guitars and given it a bit of a refresher. Those wanting a thinline acoustic, something slightly smaller or a solid instrument for acoustic and amplified work should delve further into the APX 600. It’s got an improved, bigger sound, feels nice to play and the pickup system is clear and concise. A great guitar for beginners through to advanced players and a solid all rounder at a good price.
