The factory-matched small-diaphragm condensers unlock 27 microphone models through the Virtual Microphone System plugin, with all models now included at no extra cost.
Slate Digital has released the ML-2A, a factory-matched pair of small-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphones designed for instrument recording. Building on the original ML-2, this new version offers expanded dynamic range and improved sonic detail, and when paired with the company’s Virtual Microphone System (VMS) plugin, gives you access to 27 modelled microphones without needing to purchase additional mic packs.

The ML-2A represents a shift in Slate Digital’s approach. Previously, users had to buy mic models as add-ons. Now, every ML-2A ships with the complete library included—27 microphone models covering dynamics like the S-57 and S-421, ribbons such as the S-121, small-diaphragm condensers like the S-451 and S-222, and large-diaphragm condensers including the S-414 and S-67. You can mix, match, or blend these models to suit each source in your project.
Each microphone features a -20dB pad and bass roll-off switch, making them suitable for high-SPL sources without clipping. Precision components ensure the mics provide a neutral platform for the VMS modelling to work accurately. Included with the pair is a mounting bar for stereo configurations, making them practical for drum overheads, acoustic guitars, piano, or any stereo miking application.
Zero-latency processing in the VMS plugin lets you audition different mic models while tracking, and you can change the modelled mic later during mixing if you need a different character. Proximity effect controls add further tonal shaping, and the Virtual Preamps Collection introduces colour and vintage saturation for a complete in-the-box front-end recording chain.
“With the ML-2A, we set out to redefine and enhance what the original ML-2 offered,” said Chad Carrier, VP Products at Slate Digital. “Joining the new ML-1A, this new generation offers extended headroom for high-SPL sources, improved resolution for capturing every nuance, and now unlocks our entire library of classic and modern microphone models.”
Speaking of the ML-1A, Slate Digital is also shipping every ML-1A with all 38 of its vocal-optimised mic models included. Previously, these required separate purchases. For engineers building out a mic locker without the space or budget for vintage gear, having both the ML-1A for vocals and the ML-2A for instruments covers a lot of ground.
Buyers will also receive three months’ access to the Complete Access Bundle subscription, which includes over 150 plugins from Slate Digital, SSL, and Harrison Audio—a great way to explore the wider catalogue if you haven’t already.
