Italian pedal maker OPFXS has launched Dig Deep Sim, a free plugin that faithfully emulates both the Dig Deep MK1 and MK3 suboctave pedals, available now for Windows and macOS.

Free plugins that really deliver are rare, but Dig Deep Sim is worth a look. Italian effects outfit OPFXS has released Dig Deep Sim, the first official software emulation of its Dig Deep MK1 and MK3 pedals. Built from the original algorithms of both units, it’s available as a free download for Windows (VST3) and macOS (Audio Unit), with an optional donation if you want to support development.

For those unfamiliar with the hardware, the Dig Deep series is a suboctave pedal with a specific and very useful trick: it generates a natural monophonic bass signal on the lower strings only, without interfering with the upper strings. Tracking is fast and stable, even across arpeggios and complex chord voicings, which, on a suboctaver, is not a given.

The MK1 is the simpler of the two, with straightforward controls, low latency and musical response. The MK3 is the more fully featured version, adding advanced parameter control, internal presets, MIDI and USB connectivity and a dedicated editor. Dig Deep Sim is primarily modelled on the MK3, with all of its main parameters on board: Dry, Sub1, Sub2, Sub Mix, Range, LPF, HPF, Wave and an Instrument Range setting to accommodate standard tuning, drop or lower tunings and electric bass. A dedicated MK1 mode is also included, with recommended settings to replicate the original’s simpler character.

Practically speaking, the plugin maintains the same core behaviour as the pedals, with stable tracking on chords and inversions, extremely low perceived latency and the ability to isolate the lower strings cleanly without artifacts. It works with both electric and acoustic instruments across different tunings.

For guitarists, producers and engineers who want that suboctave bass layer in the box without reaching for a pedal and an audio interface, this is a useful addition to the plugin folder. The fact that it’s free makes the barrier to trying it basically zero.
