About two weeks after the San Francisco Art Exchange announced that they would be selling one of Eric Clapton’s famed black Stratocasters, Dylan’s 1963 Martin D-28 will open at a starting bid of $300,000. The guitar was used by the star from the late 60’s to the mid-70’s, including at George Harrison’s iconic Concert for Bangladesh in 1971 and on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour.
Dylan’s former guitar repairman Larry Cragg bought the acoustic from the singer in 1977 when he switched from Martins to Gibsons, purchasing the guitar for $500. The original receipt from this exchange will be part of the latest sale of the guitar.
“It has the same bridge pins, everything is just like it was when he had it. Same case and everything, just like it was 40 years ago,” said Cragg. “It’s kind of past being a guitar now. It’s the kind of thing that you’d think that people would put in a glass case or in a museum somewhere.”
The auction takes place on Saturday November 11. Head to Heritage Auctions for more information.
