The station will celebrate the decade that was through specialised programming and an assortment of flashbacks throughout September. There are a bunch of initiatives launching as part of the celebration, including a marathon of ‘90s tunes across an entire weekend from Thursday September 6 right through to Monday September 10.
Weekly programs like the J Files are also getting on board, offering insight into quintessential ‘90s bands such as Powderfinger and Radiohead. Elsewhere, classic albums from the likes of Jamiroquai and Cypress Hill will be analysed on the airwaves, while key years from the decade are set to take over programming on Saturday nights with Richard Kingsmill’s Funhouse. You’ll even have the chance to tune in and decide if you agree on the station’s choices for the top 50 Australian albums of the ‘90s from 2pm on Saturday September 15.
Ella Hooper is also taking the time to host some ‘90s gold each Sunday afternoon as Double J’s artist in residence.
“I’ll be playing tracks that are special to me, stuff that is important from the era and songs you’ve completely forgotten about,” said Hooper. “Plus, some special guests coming in each week. People you’ll know and love.”
The celebrations are topped off with weekly throwbacks to unforgettable gigs from the ‘90s, as recorded by triple j. Expect to hear Sonic Youth’s set from Big Day Out 1993, Pearl Jam live at the Flinders Park Tennis Centre in 1995, and more.
Tune in for a trip down memory lane over at Double J. While you wait, reminisce on the ’90s with our best music videos of the decade.
