Deftones announce 20th anniversary reissue of White Pony

The band announced the news in a virtual press conference surrounding the anniversary of the album this morning, detailing their plans to celebrate the genre defining record with a deluxe edition featuring the Black Stallion remix album.

“We’re going to be releasing later in the year a reissue of the record and we’re going to do sort of a split side of the record, a remixed version of it titled Black Stallion,” singer Chino Moreno said in the press conference. ” We have a bunch of different people on it, some that actually inspired some of the writing of the record itself, the original album. So it’s kind of come full circle.”

The band’s resident keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado also added that DJ Shadow would appear on the Black Stallion remix album, stating that the group have been plotting the release for years now.

“We would talk about how good it was going to be, and we’d immediately jump to, ‘It’s going to be so good, we’re going to have Shadow remix it and we’ll call it Black Stallion,” he said.

“I think one time we actually hit him up. He was playing here in town and I was opening DJing and me and Chino kind of cornered him. We were like, ‘Hey man, what’s up, we’re the Deftones,’ and he looked at us like we were fucking crazy. We were like, ‘We want you remix our record,’ and he was like, ‘Deftones? Are you guys ska?’”

Although they didn’t detail any other guests or a release date of sorts, the band did give journalists a rare insight into the recording and context of many songs on White Pony. Given that Deftones are slated to release a new record later this September, it looks like it’s gearing up to be a big year for fans of the band, and we’re totally here for it.
