The solo project of local producer/engineer Edvard Hakansson, Comedown Party places an emphasis upon creating emotive soundscapes through combining sampled beats and processed vocals with lo-fi synthesisers and live guitars, offering an intriguingly organic and encapsulating listening experience. ‘Swollen/Morning’ acts as Comedown Party’s first taster for 2019, with last year’s releases ‘Sentimental’ and ‘Somebody Loves You’ receiving heavy praise from Triple J Unearthed and IOHYOU.
Powered by a minimalist post-punk bassline and a relentless breakbeat, ‘Swollen’ acts as a vulnerable reflection of the artist’s attempts to navigate a troubled relationship, concluding with instrumental flourishes reminiscent of the more tender moments of Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool. ‘Morning,’ on the other hand, sees Comedown Party eschew traditional structure to create an immersive soundscape of processed vocals and lush synth loops, serving as one of the producer’s finest instrumental offerings to date – if you’re a fan of the likes of James Blake and Bon Iver, this one will be right up your alley.
