MTV Unplugged Australia to relaunch in Melbourne next month

Words by Will Brewster

Tash Sultana has been announced as this year's first performer.

After launching in 2019 with performances from Courtney Barnett, DMA’s and Gang of Youths, MTV Australia has confirmed the return of MTV Unplugged in Melbourne this year.

The acoustic shows, which became a noted cultural phenomenon in the 1990s, will make a comeback for 2021 with a special set from Tash Sultana off the back of their ARIA #1 record Terra Firma.

The set will be filmed live in front of a small live audience at Melbourne’s Chapel Off Chapel on Tuesday May 4, and is set to be broadcasted on MTV Australia later this year.

“To be able to play an MTV Unplugged set is pretty special,” Sultana said of the upcoming Unplugged concert.

“It’s something that everyone knows about so I’m really looking forward to being a part of it. Also, to do it in my hometown is a massive bonus.”

Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements also celebrated the return of the series, saying that “Music and live gigs are part of Melbourne’s DNA, and we’re excited to welcome Tash and the team at MTV to showcase our city its iconic and intimate venues,”

“MTV Unplugged Melbourne joins an impressive list of events taking place in Australia’s cultural capital over the coming months including Melbourne International Comedy Festival, RISING, Moulin Rouge! The Musical and the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series at NGV and ACMI.”

In addition to releasing Terra Firma in February this year, Tash Sultana recently teamed up with Fender to launch their own Signature Stratocaster, which landed in stores last December.

Previous Australian artists to have filmed Unplugged sessions for MTV Australia include Gang of Youths, Amy Shark, The Rubens, Courtney Barnett and DMA’s.
