MESA has taken the preamp from its Subway D-350, D-800 and D-800+ bass amps and put it in a box small enough to drop into a gig bag’s accessory pocket, so you get that amp voicing without the amp. Built for silent practice, recording and touring, it runs active or passive basses through an extended-range J-FET preamp.
Round, warm cleans, mild overdrive and everything between come off the Gain, footswitchable Boost and Master Volume. One Variable Voicing knob moves the overall response between a flat character and a more vintage curve, adjusting levels and frequency across several regions at once. For finer work, a fully active four-band Baxandall EQ adds fixed shelving on the highs and lows and sweepable Low Mid and High Mid bands.
Deep and Bright switches bring roundness and top-end sparkle, and a variable Hi-Pass filter clears the subsonic frequencies that eat headroom, so you can set the low end to suit the room or the band. An Input Mute footswitch cuts the outputs for silent tuning.
The Subway+ Bass DI-Preamp II is available in Australia now through Australis Music Group. For bass players after MESA’s amp tone in something that fits on a pedalboard or in a gig bag, it puts the essentials in one box.
