The Grandchild is Heritage’s take on a classic design, and a small and more affordable version of the classic Fairchild, as well as Heritage’s own Herchild 670, aesthetically looking much more like the original.

Heritage Audio have announced their 500-series, stereo Grandchild compressor. The Fairchild design is a hugely successful and highly coveted compressor. Occupying more rack spaces than just about anything else, they’re famously famously heavy handed, especially for bottom end, without the result sounding overly processed or compressed, and the Grandchild offers all of this in just two 500-series spaces.

While doing away with the almost-20 tubes, the Grandchild has four NOS (new old stock) 6BA6 tubes, with three exclusively-designed transformers. There’s a transformer for each of the channels, as well as the sidechain. The Grandchild has an input gain control, adjusted with Heritage’s own take on the now famous Bakelite knobs. It has a Time Constant toggle, as well as a three position sidechain/knee switch to reduce the threshold being triggered by low-end; a modern addition to a vintage design. The AC THR. knob serves as the unit’s threshold. Driving input gain adds some tubey-warmth, and it’s easy to find a sweet spot between Input Gain and Treshold.
