Gibson’s Century 12-Fret series reimagines three acoustic icons

The J-45, J-185 and L-00 each get the 12-fret treatment, shifting the bridge plate for improved resonance and a warmer, more fingerstyle-friendly voice.

The 14-fret neck joint has been standard on most acoustic guitars for decades – it’s practical and familiar. Gibson’s new Century 12-Fret series makes a case for doing things differently, applying a 12-fret neck-to-body configuration across three of its most storied acoustics: the J-45, J-185 and L-00.

The change is more than cosmetic. Moving the joint back to the 12th fret shortens the neck and shifts the bridge plate away from the waist and closer to the widest point of the top. That positioning allows the soundboard to move more efficiently, which translates to a warmer, more resonant voice with improved playing comfort, particularly for fingerstyle players and those with a lighter, more nuanced attack.

The J-45 is the most recognisable of the three. Gibson’s round-shoulder dreadnought has been shaping the sound of American music since the 1930s and remains the company’s best-selling acoustic of all time, valued for its rich warmth and remarkable balance across every note. The Century 12-Fret version retains everything that makes the J-45 a J-45, with the bridge repositioned deeper into the body to make the most of the top’s natural movement.

The J-185 may not carry the same name recognition as the J-45 or the SJ-200, but among players who know it, it has a reputation as one of the finest acoustics Gibson has ever built. Originally released in 1951 with a body outline drawn from the celebrated 1920s L-5 models, the J-185 Century 12-Fret carries forward the hallmark appointments of the classic while gaining the tonal benefits of the updated joint configuration.

Rounding out the series is the L-00, Gibson’s compact small-body acoustic that dates back to the early 1930s. The 12-fret neck joint suits the L-00’s character particularly well, producing a warm, articulate and lively tonality that rewards a lighter touch.

All three models are available in Vintage Amber, Ebony and Vintage Sunburst, in both right and left-handed orientations.
