Tokyo-based audio brand Final has expanded its DX series with the DX4000CL, new closed back headphones featuring a newly developed dynamic driver and acoustic design engineered to deliver an open, resolving presentation without sacrificing the isolation closed backs are known for.

Closed back headphones have a bit of a reputation to shake. Heavy bass, a confined soundstage, a sense of being boxed in – this is the familiar set of trade-offs that most listeners have simply accepted as part of the deal. Final disagrees, and the DX4000CL is the latest argument for their case.

Catch up on all the latest news here.

Sitting between the flagship DX6000CL and the well-regarded DX3000CL, the new model carries the same core philosophy that has defined the DX series: balance, control, and spatial realism over the kind of low-end emphasis that makes a headphone feel impressive for ten minutes and fatiguing for two hours. The DX4000CL takes particular aim at the low-frequency rumble common in closed back designs, engineering it out rather than leaning into it. The result is bass that’s articulate and supportive rather than dominant — present when the music calls for it, out of the way when it doesn’t.

The technical foundation is a newly developed 40mm paper-carbon composite diaphragm, designed for precise movement and optimised airflow within the housing. The internal acoustic structure has been tuned to suppress resonance and keep complex passages composed and well-separated — the kind of detail that matters when you’re listening to a dense mix or a recording with a lot going on spatially. Vocals carry lifelike presence, instruments have convincing body, and micro-detail surfaces without the listener having to hunt for it.

Final includes a silver-coated 4.4mm cable as standard, paired with a 4.4mm to 6.3mm adapter. For a headphone positioned at this level, that’s a considered inclusion rather than an afterthought — the cable is designed to enhance signal transmission and contribute to the overall transparency of the presentation.

Weighing in at 375g excluding the cable, with synthetic leather and memory foam earpads, the DX4000CL is built for extended sessions. The impedance sits at 37Ω, sensitivity at 96dB/mW, and the housing is resin construction — consistent with Final’s broader design approach of considered materials over flashy aesthetics.

The Final DX4000CL is available now through selected retailers. More information at final-audio.com.
