Eric Church’s touring guitar gets the Epiphone treatment

Epiphone Eric Church Hummingbird Dark

The limited-edition Hummingbird Dark packages two years of live performance into a signature acoustic-electric built around Church's classic square-shoulder tone.

Epiphone has released the Inspired by Gibson Eric Church Hummingbird Dark, a limited-edition signature acoustic-electric that Church has been playing live for more than two years.

Modelled after Church’s Gibson Hummingbird from a decade ago, the Hummingbird Dark arrives in Cobra Burst with black binding, darkened hardware and a custom pickguard. Under stage lights, that combination reads clearly from the back row.

A solid Sitka spruce top pairs with layered mahogany back and sides for warmth and midrange punch with clear articulation. The neck is a Rounded C mahogany profile, comfortable over long sets, with a rosewood fingerboard, grey pearloid parallelogram inlays, Graph Tech nut and saddle, and Nickel Grover tuners. Body depth tapers from 4 inches to 3 inches at the neck joint, a detail that makes more difference than it sounds on a full square-shoulder body over a two-hour show.

Church says the guitar is where “songs take shape, where ideas turn into something real,” and two years of nightly use backs that up. The guitar has been part of his live rig throughout the Free the Machine Tour and a run of sold-out Red Rocks shows this July. It ships in a custom Eric Church signature hardshell case.

Alongside the guitar, Gibson and Church’s Whiskey JYPSI label have announced Tonewood, a collaboration built around two limited whiskey expressions finished using maple tonewood offcuts from Gibson’s guitar production. Where you’d usually expect the relationship to run the other way (whiskey barrels becoming guitar parts), here it’s reversed: guitar wood shapes the whiskey. A portion of proceeds benefits Gibson Gives.

The Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Eric Church Hummingbird Dark is a limited edition – so keep in mind, it probably won’t be around indefinitely.
