Electro-Harmonix has released the Bass Big Muff Pi 2, a "bassified" version of the recently resurrected Dual Op-Amp Big Muff 2 circuit.
Some pedals get discontinued, and others get buried entirely. The Dual Op-Amp Big Muff 2 circuit fell firmly into the latter category – lost until Electro-Harmonix dug it back up in collaboration with Josh Scott of JHS Pedals. Once that circuit was back on the table, it didn’t take long to recognise it had a heap of potential for bass players.

The result is the Bass Big Muff Pi 2, a “bassified” low-end version of the long-lost Dual Op-Amp Big Muff 2. Built around the same pushed mid grunt and singing sustain that Big Muff fans know well, the Bass Big Muff Pi 2 takes that foundation and optimises it for the low end. The control layout starts with the familiar VOL, TONE and SUSTAIN knobs handling output volume, treble/bass EQ balance and distortion, respectively. For anyone who has spent time with a Big Muff in any of its forms, that trio will feel immediately familiar.
A BLEND knob controls the wet/dry mix, perfect for extra clarity and low-end. The BASS BOOST switch adds extra low end to the signal – even at higher TONE settings where that weight would typically thin out, which is handy for players who want presence and bottom end at the same time.
The footswitch also supports both latching and momentary operation. Click it for normal on/off behaviour, or press and hold for a burst of fuzz that cuts out the moment you lift your foot – useful for accents and one-off textural moments.
The Bass Big Muff Pi 2 is the result of the Big Muff’s storied history as a favourite fuzz pedal amongst bassists, combined with the long-lost Op-Amp Fuzz that never was. What you’ll get is a pedall with a tone all its own, built specifically for players who want satisfying fuzz without giving up any low-end in the process.
