Apple are charging ahead with their new M1 chip, adding new MacBook Pros to the mix which use the in-house designed chip. What you need to know:

  • Apple have unveiled 14-inch and 16-inch editions of the MacBook Pro with some models boasting the new M1 Max chip.

First, in good news for music producers, the headphone jacks now support high impedance headphones which enable studio reference headphones to be used directly with the new laptops. Magsafe is back for charging the MacBook but Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports still remain as a charging option.

With regards to in-built audio functions, theres two tweeters and four force cancelling woofers that deliver 80% more bass and reach half an octave lower than the previous edition of MacBook Pros. Although most audio heads will be listening to music through dedicated speakers, this is still a cool update for another listening angle.

Courtesy of Apple’s new M1 Pro and Max chips, CPU performance is 2x faster and 2.5x/4x GPU performance from Pro and Max chips respectively. With MacBook Pros already sought after by music producers, this hardware update will allow for more plugins to run on your session without audio clicking and crashes, especially when using Logic Pro, Apple’s DAW.

Also announced in the press ‘experience’ is a new iteration of their AirPods which boast sweat and water resistance alongside spatial audio and an adaptive EQ.

The new MacBook Pro 14 and 16-inch editions are available for purchase now with expected shipping dates on October 26, 2021.
