It’s no coincidence that some of the most intimate and enduring records were born from a chill in the air.
This issue is our Studio Special, and with autumn well and truly here, there’s no better excuse to close the door and get to work. We speak to the people behind some of Australia’s best studios about adapting and surviving, explore music-making on the go, and get a peek inside the live reimagining of Mike Oldfield’s epic Tubular Bells.
Longevity is a recurring thread throughout this issue. Gear is always changing. Studios look different now than they did 30 years ago, and they’ll look different again in another 30. Being in the world of music is a long, strange trip, but the human impulse to create remains the same, no matter how the industry shifts around it. Our cover stars, Belle and Sebastian, are proof that great music endures – heading to Australian shores to celebrate 30 years of If You’re Feeling Sinister, an album that continues to find new audiences, decade after decade.
