Electro-Harmonix has released a signature-edition Adrian Belew Echoflanger, a limited tribute reissue honouring the pedal behind one of guitar’s most idiosyncratic tonal signatures.
From his early work with Frank Zappa through stints with David Bowie and Talking Heads to his defining run with King Crimson, Belew built a reputation for pushing effects well past their supposed limits, with the original Echoflanger central to many of his most recognisable sounds. This reissue is built to replicate that original unit, spanning everything from lush, subtle modulations to full-blown, out-of-bounds sonic experimentation.

It’s a fitting pairing given Electro-Harmonix’s own history of building effects that blur the line between studio tool and instrument in their own right, and Belew’s status as one of the few guitarists to turn that unpredictability into a genuine signature style. Where most players treat a flanger or chorus pedal as a subtle colouring tool, Belew leaned into the Echoflanger’s more extreme settings to conjure the swooping, almost vocal textures that became a hallmark of his playing across four decades of recordings and live performances.
The pedal includes Belew’s classic modes — Filter Matrix, Flange, Chorus and Slap Back — alongside two new additions: Slap Back + Filter Matrix, and Chorus + Flange, the latter inspired by Belew’s own custom “in-between” setting that blends the sweep of a flanger with the thickening warmth of a chorus.
